ユニバーサル ミュージックが、「日本人が洋楽をあまり聴かなくなった」ことを心配して、「UM English Lab.」というプロジェクトを始めました。レディー・ガガなどの人気洋楽を使って、英語を教える教材を無料で学校に配ります。洋楽を楽しんでもらいながら、英語を「聴く・話す」力をつけるのが目標です。
昔は洋楽が売上の40%だったけど、今は10%以下に減っていて、コロナ禍でアーティストが来日できなかったのも原因です。先生たちが忙しくて教材を作る時間がないので、その手助けもします。
3月14日に渋谷の中学校で授業をやってみせました。レディー・ガガの曲で歌詞の意味を考えたり、「he」が神様を指すと教えたりしました。歌手のクリスタル・ケイさんも来て、洋楽で英語を学ぶ良さを話しました。
ウェブサイトで教材や情報を公開して、洋楽と英語を一緒に楽しめるようにします。

Universal Music, concerned that “Japanese people are listening to Western music less,” has launched a project called “UM English Lab.” They’re using popular Western songs by artists like Lady Gaga to create free English teaching materials for schools. The goal is to help students enjoy Western music while improving their listening and speaking skills in English.
In the past, Western music accounted for 40% of their sales, but now it’s dropped to less than 10%, partly because artists couldn’t visit Japan during the pandemic. Teachers are also too busy to prepare materials, so the project aims to support them.
On March 14, they held a demo class at a middle school in Shibuya. Students explored the meaning of Lady Gaga’s lyrics and learned that “he” refers to God. Singer Crystal Kay also joined, sharing how great it is to learn English through Western music.
They’ll share materials and information on a website, making it fun to enjoy Western music and English together.
